With a history of winemaking dating back to the 19th century, Sonoma's varied terroir allows it to grow grapes in multiple places throughout the region. Bordered by the Mayacamas Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, the county encompasses a range of climates and soils. The Russian River Valley, known for its cool climate influenced by fog, is acclaimed for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Alexander Valley, further inland and warmer, excels with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sonoma Coast, a region directly influenced by the Pacific's cool breezes and fog, is gaining recognition for elegant, cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Trousseau, a grape from France's Jura, is not what the region is known for. But at Bohan Vineyard, 1,400 feet above sea level and three miles from the Pacific Ocean, the conditions suit the variety precisely: gravelly loam over sandstone and shale, cool ocean air cutting through the hills all season, and the kind of bracing salinity that translates directly into the glass. At this elevation on the true Sonoma Coast, the ocean acts as thermostat, keeping temperatures moderate and ripening slow through the entire growing season. The result is a naturally low-alcohol, high-acid red with a transparency and site-character that warmer inland sites cannot produce. This is not the lush, perfumed Sonoma Coast people expect.

The Wine

100% Trousseau from Bohan Vineyard, re-grafted onto the rootstock of an earlier Merlot planting. Practicing organic farming. The 2023 Sonoma Coast growing season was long and cool, following a wet winter that delayed budbreak and extended the ripening window well into fall. The result is a wine of precision and lift. Pale ruby in the glass. Dried red cherry, kirsch, white pepper, and crushed flowers lead; the palate is light-bodied with low tannins and brisk acidity, threaded with saline notes that echo the vineyard's proximity to the ocean. The finish is effortless. Trousseau fits that mission exactly: a low-profile grape at the margins of where it's supposed to grow, on a vineyard converted from something more conventional. Passalacqua is a Napa Valley native who worked with Eben Sadie in South Africa, with Alain and Maxime Graillot in the Northern Rhone, and at Craggy Range in New Zealand before two decades at Turley Wine Cellars, where he eventually became Director of Winemaking. Sandlands launched in 2010 and produces around 4,000 cases total, most sold directly to consumers.

Food Pairing

Low tannins, bright acidity, and a saline backbone make this unusually versatile at the table. These are volcanic sites built on ancient lava flows and fractured basalt, farmed as small soil-defined parcels the estate calls polygons. Elevation, cool nights, and dry-farmed vines on rocky ground push roots deep and hold acidity, which is why Grenache here leans red-fruited and mineral rather than jammy. Fresh raspberry and red cherry, dried rose and wild herb, white pepper, and a chalky, volcanic minerality on the finish. There is grip and lift here rather than weight. The 2024 vintage in Sonoma followed a wet winter and a hot summer with a mild, even finish; smaller clusters gave concentrated color and bright acidity, and the year is being called one of the county's best in decades.

The People

The Hamel family bought their first Sonoma property in 2006, and John Hamel has led winemaking since 2017. Since 2016 the family has worked with Chilean terroir specialist Pedro Parra, known as Dr. Terroir, mapping the volcanic soils meter by meter; Hamel is his only client in California. Sonoma Coast AVA, and mostly Green Valley of Russian River, the coolest and foggiest corner of the Russian River Valley, sitting closest to the Pacific and buried in marine fog most summer mornings. Green Valley ripens later than anywhere else in the appellation and holds acid longer, which is why it is Pinot Noir and sparkling ground rather than Cabernet ground. That matters more than usual here, because this fruit is picked deliberately early, before sugar accumulates, to keep acidity and freshness. Early picking from a cool site is the entire structural argument for a low-alcohol wine. Pick early somewhere warm and you get thin and sour. Pick early in Green Valley and you get taut. The vineyards are sustainably farmed.

The Wine

One hundred percent rosé of Pinot Noir, 7 percent alcohol, 72 calories a glass, and vegan. The 7 percent is the whole proposition, roughly half what Sonoma Coast Pinot normally lands at. Fermentation is cool and clean in stainless tank, the alcohol is then adjusted down to session strength, and the wine is given frizzante-style bubbles: a soft spritz rather than the hard, fine mousse of a traditional-method sparkler. Elevage is entirely in tank, no wood anywhere. Strawberry, watermelon rind, pink grapefruit, a little white peach, and a dry, briskly acidic finish. This is not a sweet wine dressed up as a light one, which is the trap most low-alcohol bottles fall into. Serve it colder than you think, and in a real wine glass rather than a flute, because the aromatics need the room.

The People

Que Pop started as an accident. In the 2024 vintage the team found itself with extra Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and no clear destination for it. Rob, the winemaker, saw where the market was heading on lower alcohol, decided he wanted to get there without giving up a sense of place, and started tinkering. He cut the alcohol roughly in half, added bubbles, and gave it a cheerful outfit. Around the winery the project got nicknamed K-POP, a play on Rob's Korean heritage. The wine belongs to Valkyrie Selections, a Sonoma-based group that also produces in the Willamette Valley and Washington State. We will say plainly that there is no long estate history to recount here and no point pretending otherwise. What there is: genuine Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, sustainably farmed, handled by someone who knew exactly what he was doing with it.

Food Pairing

A 7 percent sparkling rosé is a different tool than a wine. Spicy food it handles better than almost anything, because there is not enough alcohol to amplify heat: green papaya salad, larb, anything with fish sauce and chile. The part that matters is the far western edge, the true coast, where fog sits in the canyons past noon and Pinot Noir ripens weeks later than it does anywhere warmer. Cobb works this narrow band. The family's Coastlands vineyard sits at 1,150 feet, three miles from the ocean, on marine sedimentary soils, planted between 1989 and 1998. Other sites around Occidental and the Sebastopol Hills sit on Goldridge sandy loam, the ancient uplifted seabed that gives this corner of California its reputation, sometimes with volcanic ash mixed through. The Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard sits in the Russian River Valley, planted in 1981 by Peter Fanucchi's father back when the grape was still called Grey Riesling and was widely planted across the state. Everything else got pulled out. The site is sandy Russian River bench land, cool and fog-influenced, with morning marine fog burning off into warm afternoons and then dropping cold again at night. Trousseau Gris is a pink-skinned mutation of the Jura's Trousseau, and it needs precisely this kind of long, cool ripening window to hold its acidity while the skins develop color. Five days is enough to pull texture and a light phenolic grip without the wine going bitter or tannic. Expect white peach, watermelon rind, dried orange, wet stone, and a savory, almost herbal note underneath, dry and quite high in acid with a lightly grippy finish. 2024 in the Russian River Valley ran cool in spring, warm through midsummer, then mild in the days and genuinely cold at night through harvest, which let the fruit hang and hold acidity.

The People

Two Shepherds is William Allen and Karen Daenen, working from a small farm in Windsor. Every vineyard was picked and fermented separately, none of it destemmed, so the whole cluster share is total. Fermentations run with native yeast and a submerged cap with pump-overs, a method borrowed openly from Gentaz and Juge in Cote-Rotie and Cornas. Aging is nine months in neutral oak; no new wood touches this wine. The result is dark but not heavy: black olive, cracked pepper, blood orange peel, smoked meat, violet, and green peppercorn over a taut, high-acid, low-alcohol frame with tannin that grips at the back rather than the front. 2024 in Sonoma was a cool spring into a warm midsummer, then mild days and cold nights straight through harvest. Growers picked without pressure and the fruit came in with higher acidity than a warm year normally delivers, which is exactly the condition whole-cluster Syrah wants.

The People

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts have been friends since childhood and have been making wine together since 2001. What made them influential was not the winemaking so much as the vineyard sleuthing, finding cold, marginal, overlooked parcels like Clary Ranch and Trout Gulch that nobody had taken seriously and proving what they could do. The AVA sits at the southern end of Sonoma and Napa, opening directly onto San Pablo Bay, so marine fog pushes through it before it reaches anywhere else in either valley, and afternoon wind follows the fog in. Growing-season temperatures run well below what most people picture when they hear Sonoma. Soils are shallow clay loam over a dense, compacted subsoil that limits vine vigor and keeps clusters and berries small. The result is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reach flavor ripeness at low sugar while holding their acid, which is exactly what a sparkling base wine needs. Carneros became sparkling wine country because the climate left it no better option, and that constraint is the reason a bottle at this price tastes the way it does.

The Wine

88 percent Pinot Noir and 12 percent Chardonnay, a heavier Pinot share than most California brut carries, and the reason this wine has red-apple weight underneath the citrus rather than just citrus. Fruit is hand-picked into small bins and whole-cluster pressed, so the juice comes off the skins fast and clean. Primary fermentation runs in stainless steel at 55 to 60°F, cool enough to hold the aromatics intact. The wine is then bottled for its second fermentation and left 18 months on the lees, which is where the toast and the creamy middle come from. Dosage is 12.4 g/L, at the upper end of brut, and it is set against a finished pH of 3.04; the acidity here is high enough to absorb that sugar without the wine reading sweet. Production began in 1986, making this the first sparkling wine house in Carneros and the one that proved the region could do it. The Cava inheritance is visible in the setup: caves dug into the hillside for temperature-stable aging, and traditional method start to finish. Ownership has shifted since. Gloria Ferrer joined Henkell Freixenet's portfolio in 2018, with Freixenet Mionetto USA handling sales in the States. The farming has moved the other direction. Their James Creek Vineyard Gamay has run heavily carbonic in recent vintages and rested six months in neutral French oak. Expect what that combination gives from cold coastal fruit — tart red cherry, cranberry skin, violets, crushed herbs, fine gritty tannin, and enough acidity to want twenty minutes in the fridge. They bought enough for two barrels, made the 2017, and it sold out in months. This one does not. The label carries the broad California appellation, but the grapes come off the Central Coast. That stretch runs more than 250 miles, from south of San Francisco Bay down past Santa Barbara, and what unites it is cold Pacific air. Transverse valleys and gaps in the coastal ranges act as funnels, pulling marine fog inland every morning and dropping a hard afternoon wind behind it. That pattern shuts down photosynthesis in the heat of the day and stretches the season out, so Chardonnay accumulates sugar slowly and holds acidity while flavors fill in. The 2024 vintage on the Central Coast opened with a cool, wet spring that set a healthy crop, then turned warm from July, with a two-week heat wave and another heat event after Labor Day that pushed ripening fast. Yields came in below 2023 across the region, in some cases sharply. Gordon taught himself wine through the 1980s, when American sommeliers barely existed as a profession. He started the label to fill a gap on his own list: honest everyday bottles at a real price. His early sourcing came through Napa and Sonoma contacts including Caymus, Lewis Cellars and Miner Family.
