This wine is the result of a collaboration between Pierluigi Lugano and his good friend Eli Spagnol of Torre Zecchei. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with meticulous temperature regulation, the wine retains its delicate freshness and vivid character. Sealed with a crown cap, this method ensures the wine's effervescence and vibrant quality. Notably, since 2016, using a crown cap disqualifies the wine from being labeled as Prosecco, even though it proudly lists the Glera grape. The estate's Prosecco DOC vines sit over Caranto, a compact layer of maritime clay studded with calcareous nodules that formed in the Pleistocene era, somewhere between 11,000 and 2.5 million years ago. That ancient marine clay is the estate's signature, and it hands the wine a mineral edge you don't usually associate with Prosecco. The brut dosage keeps it dry and direct, letting the Glera and that Caranto minerality show without a sugar cushion. Expect a bright straw color, golden apple and white flowers on the nose, and a fruity, fragrant palate with clean flavor and good length. Primofiore, the first flower, is the exception, released within a couple of years of harvest. It is still grown on the same ground, the family's hillside at Cerè above Negrar in the Valpolicella Classico zone north of Verona, where roughly 11 hectares of vines climb an east-facing slope on limestone and basalt. That combination explains a lot about the wine: the limestone gives it a firm line of acidity, and the dark basalt adds a savory, faintly smoky edge. Kermit Lynch, the US importer, has described the mix as roughly half local grapes and half Cabernet, with only the Cabernet portion partially dried and the Corvina and Corvinone pressed right after harvest. That split is the point: the fresh-pressed fruit keeps it lively, while the brief drying gives the Cabernet a little concentration. It then ages in large Slavonian oak casks, for far less time than any other Quintarelli red. The 2024 season opened with heavy spring rain and serious mildew pressure, then turned hot through July and August, ripening the grapes early and cleanly. Violet, fresh and brandied cherry, red currant, green peppercorn and cocoa, with fine, dusty tannin, bright acidity and a savory, peppery finish.

The People

Giuseppe Quintarelli, called Bepi, ran his father Silvio's estate from 1950 until his death in 2012, and in that time became the most revered traditionalist in the Veneto. He dried grapes longer, aged wines longer and refused to make Amarone at all in vintages he did not trust, and he wrote his labels by hand. He was also restless. Wine Spectator credits him with being among the first to plant Cabernet in Valpolicella, which is where this wine's backbone comes from. Today his daughter Fiorenza and her husband Giampaolo Grigoli run the estate with their sons Francesco and Lorenzo. They have kept the old methods almost untouched while tightening precision in the cellar. Primofiore is the family's youngest red, and it makes a good introduction to the house style at a fraction of the cost of the Amarone.

Food Pairing

This is the Quintarelli for a Tuesday. The fruit comes from the family's hillside at Cerè in the Negrar valley, one of the valleys that make up the historic Valpolicella Classico zone in the hills north of Verona. The estate farms roughly 11 hectares on an east-facing slope called Monte Ca' Paletta, on soils of limestone and basalt. The limestone keeps acidity intact through a long ripening season, and the basalt, old volcanic rock, lends a dark, savory quality. About half the grapes are laid out to dry for roughly two months after harvest, the same appassimento that makes the Amarone but shorter, then fermented together with the fresh fruit. The dried portion brings body, glycerol and dried-cherry depth; the fresh portion keeps the wine lifted. It then rests in large Slavonian oak casks for years before bottling, so the wood shapes texture and not flavor. The 2019 vintage was widely praised in Valpolicella: a chilly spring cut yields and set up a long, slow maturation, and a warm late summer finished the ripening. In the glass: sour and dried cherry, toasted hazelnut, black tea, tobacco, a little orange peel and dried rose. The importer describes aging of two to three years in French barrels followed by several more in large Slavonian oak casks, and like everything at Quintarelli it is released only when the family judges it ready. The 2018 season in Valpolicella brought a stormy, unsettled spring and a hot summer. Expect cassis and black plum paste, dried fig, graphite, cedar, tobacco and bitter chocolate, a dense but polished tannic frame, and a long finish of pencil shavings and dried herbs. This Cabernet from the Veneto will keep for decades.

The People

Silvio Quintarelli, a former sharecropper, moved his family to Cerè in 1924. His son Giuseppe, known as Bepi, took over in 1950 and turned the estate into the benchmark for traditional Amarone, with long drying, long cask aging, hand-written labels, and a refusal to release Amarone in vintages he did not trust. He was also a quiet experimenter. According to Wine Spectator, he created Alzero in 1982 and was among the first to plant Cabernet in the appellation, and he treated those French grapes exactly as he treated his Corvina. Bepi died in January 2012 at 84. His daughter Fiorenza and her husband Giampaolo Grigoli run the estate with their sons Francesco and Lorenzo, keeping the methods largely as he left them. Farming is minimally invasive, with close attention to sorting.

Food Pairing

Alzero needs food with fat and depth. Braised beef short ribs finished in their own reduced sauce give the tannin something to grip, and the dried-fruit side of the wine meets the sweetness of the braise. A bone-in ribeye grilled over hardwood and sliced with flaky salt works for the same reason, the salt softening the tannin. Venison loin with a juniper and red wine sauce picks up the herbal, cedar edge of the Cabernet Franc. Afterward, a wedge of aged Monte Veronese or three-year Parmigiano Reggiano handles the alcohol better than any dessert. Decant it for a few hours and save it for the dinner where someone at the table will ask what the bottle was.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0439/7436/1248/collections/image_cc4be8c3-10e3-444b-88c1-264b78eb39db.jpg?v=1632606032
