The burja, a cold northeasterly that can top 100 kilometers per hour, scours the valley in winter and spring, drying the canopy and keeping disease pressure low. Obelunec is a single vineyard near the village of Goče in the upper valley, planted at 350 to 400 meters on soils dominated by limestone and marl. Around Goče that marl is bright white and interleaved with sandstone, the same layered flysch that Friulians across the border call ponca, laid down roughly 65 million years ago. It drains fast but holds enough water through dry summers, and it is the reason this is a Vipava white wine built on tension rather than tropical fruit.

The Wine

The Hedele Obelunec Sauvignon 2022 is Sauvignon Blanc from a single named site, bottled under a vineyard name, where the estate's other Sauvignon carries only the village name, Goče. Grapes are picked by hand, pressed gently and fermented in small oak vats, the house method across Hedele's whites. Expect Sauvignon in its Central European register: elderflower, lime zest, white peach and a flinty, smoky edge from the marl, with a fuller, oily texture than New World examples and a long, saline finish. 2022 was a drought year across Slovenia, with below-normal rain from autumn 2021 and repeated summer heat waves, so expect riper fruit than usual held in check by the site's elevation.

The People

Andrea Pittana spent years as a viticulturist in Friuli, working alongside the Friulian producer Marco Sara before the soils on the Slovenian side of the border pulled him east. He began buying vineyards in the Vipava Valley in 2011, concentrating on sites around Goče under the name Kmetija Hedele. Pittana farms organically, does not irrigate and picks by hand, choices that matter more on thin flysch soils where dry-farmed vines have to dig for water. The wines reach the US through Benvenusa, the import company Bobby Stuckey MS and Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson founded in 2023 to bring small, hand-harvesting estates from Friuli and its neighbors to American tables. Obelunec is where Pittana's viticulture background shows most clearly: one hillside, farmed closely, bottled on its own.

Food Pairing

Serve it around 50 to 54 degrees, not ice cold, so the texture shows. Pan-seared trout with brown butter, capers and lemon is the regional move, and the wine's acidity cuts the butter while its salinity meets the capers. Asparagus risotto finished with Parmigiano and lemon zest works because the wine's green, herbal side matches the asparagus rather than fighting it. Try goat cheese and leek tart with a thyme crust, where acidity slices through the cheese. Schnitzel with a squeeze of lemon and a cucumber-dill salad is the Austro-Hungarian classic. This is the bottle to open when a Sauvignon Blanc drinker is ready to find out what else the grape can do.
