Hudelot-Noëllat's comes from the domaine's own parcels around Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, close to Musigny and the Clos de Vougeot. Chambolle is the village most associated with perfume and fine-grained tannin in red Burgundy, a reputation built on limestone soils with comparatively little clay. Bourgogne-classified vines sit on the flatter ground below the village and premier cru slopes, where soils run deeper and the wine comes out rounder and ready sooner. The cool, east-facing Côte de Nuits keeps acidity bright even when the fruit is ripe. This is Pinot Noir from Burgundy with a specific address.

The Wine

Hudelot-Noëllat Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2024 is 100 percent Pinot Noir, predominantly destemmed with the berries left intact and fermented in cement tanks over two to three weeks. The rest of the range spends about 18 months in barrel in the domaine's cold cellar, but the Bourgogne is bottled before the following harvest, which keeps the fruit up front and the tannin light. The 2024 season was among the hardest in Burgundy in decades: a cold, wet flowering, spring and summer rain roughly double the average, and mildew from May into August cut many Côte de Nuits growers to 12 to 15 hectoliters per hectare. A sunny August and breezy September ripened what survived. In past vintages this cuvée has shown sweet cherry and raspberry, a supple, juicy middle, and a brisk finish. Expect the same lift, with the vintage's fresh acidity in front.

The People

Charles van Canneyt was 20 and had just finished his wine studies when he took over Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat from his grandfather in 2008. Inheriting Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant at that age could have meant changing nothing. Instead he gradually replaced the cellar equipment and toned down the extraction, steering the wines toward perfume and clarity over weight. The vineyards are farmed under lutte raisonnée, and the fruit is picked and sorted by hand. Within a few years the trade was calling him one of Burgundy's rising stars, and the domaine is now counted among the most respected in the Côte de Nuits. The Bourgogne is the easiest place to taste his touch: same hands, same cellar as the grand crus.

Food Pairing

Serve it a little cool, around 60°F. Roast chicken with lemon, thyme, and crackling skin is the classic match: the acidity cuts the fat and the light tannin never overwhelms the meat. Mushroom and Gruyère tartines run under the broiler bring out the earthy side of the Pinot Noir. Seared salmon with a soy and butter glaze has enough richness to meet the red fruit without clashing with tannin. On a weeknight, make turkey burgers with caramelized onions and Dijon, where the wine's brightness keeps the plate from feeling heavy. This is the bottle for a Wednesday dinner when you want real Côte de Nuits character without opening a village wine.
